Working Together for Success Teacher Grants

Our teacher grant program "Working Together for Success" is designed to further public education by supporting creative programs that are not funded by the school budget. Each year the Education Foundation provides grants to teachers, schools, and district departments for programs that focus on Literacy, STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), CTE( Career & Technical Education), and low-performing students as well as teacher professional development.

Completed Sensory Room Grant Project at Dan McCarty Middle School

Dale Cassens P.R.I.D.E. Academy is an Alternative Education Elementary School that provides an enriched learning environment to a diverse variety of students. Our students range from grades Kindergarten to Fifth and have an array of exceptionalities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. With this grant, we were able to build a sensory room for all our students to utilize. The purpose is to provide an outlet for students to be able to regulate their emotions in hopes of decreasing their negative behaviors and overall be a support in aiding their academic, behavioral and social/ emotional needs. In addition to, it will be utilized as a form of therapy to help our students become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors using special lighting, music, and objects. In our sensory room, you will find pillows, yoga balls, a foam ball pit, fidgets, a trampoline, and so much more!

The sensory room is beneficial to students that have access to it rather at home or in school because it creates a space for behavioral regulation. At Dale Cassens Pride Academy we selected a quiet corner in a room to set up a small tent with weighted blankets, crash pads, and yoga balls to encourage children to take some time to calm and redirect themselves when they are feeling overstimulated. Room call code data based on classroom disruption has decreased by 38% and children restrainsts based on continous self injurious behavior has decreased by almost 90%
